The Castle Hill Resort &
Spa, in Proctorsville, is the mansion
of former Vermont governor Allen
Miller Fletcher (1912–1914). Elegantly
preserved, the inn has many of the
stone mansion’s original fixtures and
decor, but has been upgraded with
modern amenities, such as a full-service spa in the carriage house.
Coleman Brook Tavern
In the Jackson Gore Inn, this elegant
restaurant caters to families. Parents
will enjoy sesame-crusted Ahi tuna or
Caribbean-spiced pork tenderloin, plus
an impressive wine list. With make-your-own s’mores on the dessert menu,
kids will clean their dinner plates.
The Downtown Grocery
A restaurant — not a grocery store
— this hip spot opened in downtown
Ludlow not quite two years ago
and is now so popular it’s difficult
to get a table on busy nights. Chef/
owner Rogan Lechthaler takes
local Vermont meats and cheeses
and creates entrées like homemade
gnocchi and rabbit or braised
wild boar. Reservations a must.
A local favorite, dJ’s is the place to go
for steaks, burgers and fries — and
huge portions. There’s a salad bar too.
At the bottom of the okemo Mountain
Road, Java Baba’s serves tasty
sandwiches and the best coffee around.
don’t miss the raspberry crumb cake ...
or any of the cookies.
Epic at Solitude
While skiing or riding, skip the
lodge at lunchtime and head to this
on-mountain restaurant at the base
of the Solitude chairlift. Sit down,
loosen your boots and order a duck
quesadilla or pan-fried scallops,
without paying much more than
you would have in the cafeteria. A
